walmart pays more than graduate school

Image
Recently I've been contemplating the consequences of dreaming to be a doctorate degree holder. I have grown in a society where the more degrees one holds, the more respect they get. Ironically this the same society that negates and undervalues all such achievements by women. So it really is a lose lose for women. But in most cases, in order to have a semblance of respectable existence, women in the southasian culture simply choose one side of the lose-lose and move on. So, very early on I had decided to go for higher studies and as a result didnot much think about the financial consequences of that choice. Now that I am 3 years into my PhD, this having done a masters first and having gained a year of work experience, I realize that this might not have been the best course of financial decision for my life. As it turns out, a grad students stipend is much less than even someone working at Walmart, McDonald's and pretty much anywhere else. The minimum wage for ontario...

wheel of time show vs book

Image
Wheel of Time-- amazingly famous series of books by Robert Jordan. Recently picked up by amazon as a series featuring Rosamund Pike. Yes, old news. Not trying to add value to information here though. Here, instead, I will be comparing the 1st book and the 1st season and telling you a little what I liked and didn't like from both.  First and foremost I have to mention that I love the story of Menethren, both how it was told in the book and how nicely the show has shown it. Despite the difference in presentation of the tale of Menethren, it was beautifully done and I totally loved it. Now that being out of the way, here are the ways of how the two differ in: Story: The book's prologue where Lews Therin fights Ishamael is missing from the show. The show's beginning where Red Ajah sisters hunt down a male channeller—only happens in the show. The cliff-jumping initiation ritual to the Women's Circle, is not included in the book. Perrin's gifts are...

cry it out!---please don't!

My son's pediatricians proudly says he lets his child cry at night and does not get bothered by it. If my partner, a fully adult human who is far more capable of understanding the world and his own emotions than my child, cried-- I soothe him. We are expected to be there for adults who are struggling and support them; be it our partners, siblings or friends. Then why do we expect a child who has no comprehension for the complexities of life to be not dependent upon us to cry and let us know of their distress. And how is it being a good parent to be ignoring these distress calls.  Are these methods of suggested parenting for the good of the children or to avoid hassles for the parents. Did we become parents to avoid hassles or does the tiredness and stress not come implied with all the other parental responsibilities? Why do we subject a child, who did not ask for this, to distress and refuse to help them to fit our agenda? I was not aware of the term gentle parenting un...

no sceen time!

Image
21st century and still pediatricians say "no sceen time"....what?! It goes beyond me how they do not realize that kids these days are surrounded by technology and screens are everywhere. Everything has a screen, how is anyone supposed to ensure no screen time to kids. Firstly, are there enough studies to show what the affects of screen time is really? Isnt this the first generation who is really being exposed to technology to this extreme extent. So, is there really a basis of this rule or is it just something adults as a norm do, i.e. nothing fun. These kids are not only growing up with these technology but this is going to be taken a step further in their future and become something that we cant even imagine right now. How can we keep them from daily lives. It's like insisting on raising a child in the wild because we think raising them in civilization will rob them of natural learning.  My son's pediatrician told us that tv is not ok, neither is phone o...

an over/under qualified millenial

If you are reading this, you must be on the same boat or atleast in similar boat as me. Hi, I am a Master of Science in Electronic Engineering and a post grad student, pursuing their PhD, yet I find myself not qualified for any job. Anything I apply for either lists me over qualified or under qualified and rejects me. I have applied to entry level posts only to be told that they dont trust me to stick around and everything else that basically says I need more industry experience. I have more than a year of industry experience with mutiple year teaching experience.  They say I need to be fluent in multiple programming language, be social, have masters (phd preferabled), have multiple year industry experience, be fluent in multiple languages (including english and french), have leadership qualities and so many things that I wonder if I'd be able to match those requirments in my whole lifetime. The moment I acquire a skill, they add another to the requirements and I fall back of the l...

Best actor oscars goes to...

Image
I finished watching Being the Ricardos   for which Javier Bardem is nominated, King Richard  for which Will Smith is nominated, Tick tick Boom Andrew Garfield for which and The power of the Dog , for which Benedict Cumberbatch is nominated. I have to say this is some tough competition. I watched King Richard before the rest, I was really engrossed by Smith's performance, being a fan I have always thought he deserved an oscar for the pursuit of happiness but competition that year was also fierece, so a fan only blames it on badluck. I really thought he should get the best actor oscars for this movie but then I watched Being the Ricardos. I just have to mention that I fall under that group of minority who really hated Mother   and has been sour on Javier Bardem movies since. So, I only started watching Being the Ricardos because Nicole Kidman is known for killing such roles and I didnt wanna miss that but 30 seconds into the scene where Javier Bardem starts de...
