Best actor oscars goes to...
I finished watching Being the Ricardos for which Javier Bardem is nominated, King Richard for which Will Smith is nominated, Tick tick Boom Andrew Garfield for which and The power of the Dog , for which Benedict Cumberbatch is nominated. I have to say this is some tough competition. I watched King Richard before the rest, I was really engrossed by Smith's performance, being a fan I have always thought he deserved an oscar for the pursuit of happiness but competition that year was also fierece, so a fan only blames it on badluck. I really thought he should get the best actor oscars for this movie but then I watched Being the Ricardos. I just have to mention that I fall under that group of minority who really hated Mother and has been sour on Javier Bardem movies since. So, I only started watching Being the Ricardos because Nicole Kidman is known for killing such roles and I didnt wanna miss that but 30 seconds into the scene where Javier Bardem starts delivering his dialogues and I am sold. He keeps wowing me by his performance throughout the movie till the end. The credits role and I stare at my partner and say "this is such a tough decision, Smith might not get it this time" and he gasps at my statment as he is just as surprised as I am at what just came out of my mouth; but he too can't deny the brilliance of Bardem's performance. We watch Andrew Garfield the next day followed by Benedict Cumberbatch. Now I think Benedict Cumberbatch is a brilliant actor and has given us amazing performances in movies like the Imitation Game but I do not think his performance in the Power of the Dog matched that of Smith's and Bardem's. Now that, that is out of the way, let us talk about Garfield. Naturally charming and beautiful man that he is, he portrays not that in tick tick Boom. He SINGS!!! B E A U T I F U L L Y. The directorial debut of the amazing Lin Manuel Miranda is enhanced by Garfield's amazing voice and his moving performance. I will not say anymore as saying anything at all will basically be giving away spoilers. Now that I have seen them all, except Macbeth (will come back to that), I am torn between the performances of these three brilliant actors and wish there was a way to give them all the award but alas only one must win. Oweing it to the performance, including accent, mannerism, ability to grip the audience and still blend with the rest of the aspects of the movie, I think Bardem is the winner just by a thread as he wows the audience (observe him in the very last scene, the tie breaker scene for me), JUST BY A THREAD...
Now as to why we do not discuss Macbeth here, for which Denzel Washington is nominated. I could not watch it. I love Shakespearean plays, my favoirite is the comedy of errors but I think in this day an age the adaptations should be made to fit atleast the language of the era. I am an average joe when it comes to arts and so most artsy stuff goes way over my head specially if I have to spend 80% of the time trying to understand the dialogue because it is nothing like how we speak anymore. I think Elizabethan English is not the best way to entertain todays average Joes or rather Janes like me.
